The steamship SS Great Britain was launched on this day in 1843. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was the first ocean-going craft with an iron hull or screw propeller and the largest vessel afloat in the world.

• Tom and Jerry first appeared under their own names in the cartoon “The Midnight Snack” by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera on this day in 1941
