Depp made his debut in the horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street, and in the 1990s, Depp acted mostly in independent films, often playing eccentric characters. Depp also began collaborating with director Tim Burton, starring in Edward Scissorhands in 1990, Ed Wood in 1994, and Sleepy Hollow in 1999.
In the 2000s, Depp became one of the most commercially successful film stars by playing Captain Jack Sparrow in the Walt Disney swashbuckler film series Pirates of the Caribbean. He continued his successful collaboration with Tim Burton in the films Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as Willy Wonka, and Alice in Wonderland as the Mad Hatter.

Depp also recently successfully sued Heard in a 2022 trial in Virginia, as the jury ruled that Heard’s allegations were false and defamed him under American law.
