Al Ain Zoo to offer the first outdoor penguin enclosure in the Middle East

AL AIN: The Al Ain Zoo will offer soon the first outdoor penguin enclosure in the Middle East, which presents visitors with the opportunity to enter the beach area and interact directly with the penguins in their environment, feed them and watch them swimming in the outdoor pool through specially designed glass panels.

Al Ain Zoo houses a number of the rare Humboldt Penguins, which are classified as highly endangered according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, due to illegal hunting and climate change.

The Zoo houses about 60 penguins that are provided with the highest level of care and an environment designed to simulate their cold natural habitats, an indoor 150 m3 enclosure, and a special 24/7 water purifying system that filters the penguins’ pond, in addition to a group of vets, trainers, animal care personnel specialized in penguin care. Al Ain Zoo has been very successful in breeding penguins during the past years by providing the utmost care needed for hatching mothers and newly hatched chicks.

Al Ain Zoo prides itself on the successful programs and strategies it adopts for the conservation of Humboldt Penguins, which include meticulous scientific research, breeding, and projects unique at the Middle East level.

Regarding the visitor experience and educating the public about wildlife, the Zoo offers a varied array of experiences including, the Penguin Feeding and Penguins Parade where guests can learn about the amazing Humboldt Penguins directly from their caregivers, whether in their enclosures or during the shows. The Zoo also spreads awareness about this species by providing its guests with information about the importance of these amazing birds, wildlife preservation, the dangers and challenges they face in the wild, and the important role of society and organizations in protecting nature and endangered species.
