DUBAI: A passion for World Expo lapel badges brought together the world of collectors, as dozens of avid pin pals gathered for a unique pin flea market hosted by the Poland Pavilion. The event saw collectors of numerous nationalities making exchanges and showing off their collections, some wearing them on lanyards or jackets and others carrying them in neat transparent folders.

Arisa Yamada, a collector from Japan who was conspicuous with a huge collection from different World Expos, including 800 from Expo 2020 Dubai, said, “I began collecting in 2005, and I have visited every Expo since then. I have more than 5,000 lapel pins. I thought this was a good event to swap pins from other collectors. By the way, I am already planning to visit Expo 2025 Osaka.”

Talib Nasser, an Emirati collector who has more than 400 Expo 2020 Dubai pins, has been collecting at events in Dubai for the past 50 years, including Dubai Air Show and other exhibitions. “It is a big hobby for me, and most of my collection is through swapping and online trading. I have been able to add to my collection through events like these held in the pavilions of Canada, San Marino and others at Expo 2020 Dubai.”

Ayush Ranganathan, an Indian collector from Dubai, said, “I have more than 150 pins in my collection. I am now looking for something I don’t have, as this is probably one of the last pin tradings meets in Expo. This is a great networking event. Here you meet interesting people with whom you can network in future.”

Jakub Malarwczyk, Shift Manager of Hosts, Poland Pavilion, said, “The Poland Pavilion hosted this event to bring these like-minded people together and enable them to exchange pins. The pin collection has been an interesting development at Expo 2020 Dubai and we have seen a large number of pins circulating around from different pavilions. Our pavilion itself has some 12 different pins.”

It is a tradition for most participating countries in World Expos to design and stock souvenirs such as lapel pins and magnets. While some are given away to visitors for free – sometimes only to those who ask – others reserve them for distinguished guests.
