DUBAI: Denmark celebrated its Expo 2020 Dubai National Day with a beautiful cultural performance of iconic Danish compositions by Dubai-based Danish cellist Søren Lyng Hansen.

The performance at Al Wasl Plaza saw Hansen play a selection of compositions, accompanied by pianist Antonia Stoyanova. During the early weeks of the COVID-19 lockdown, Hansen was commended for his “the show must go on” attitude, playing on his balcony every night to provide much-needed positive energy to his community.

His Excellency Sultan Al Shamsi, UAE Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for International Development Affairs welcomed the Danish delegation to Al Wasl, led by His Excellency Franz-Michael Skjold Mellbin, Ambassador of Denmark to the UAE.

HE Al Shamsi said, “Denmark’s pavilion has sustainability at its core, particularly when it comes to the architecture and engineering of the pavilion. Visitors will learn about the history of the Vikings of Denmark and experience the Danish way of life – which engenders a feeling of contentment and well-being – and discover SMEs from a wide range of industries.

“We are pleased to be Denmark’s leading partner in the Middle East for its Carbon Diplomacy, and look forward to witnessing enhanced collaborations between our two countries in energy, climate change and trade, particularly in light of the UAE’s key role as a regional hub for business.”

HE Mellbin said, “The three Expo subthemes of Mobility, Sustainability and Opportunity all reflect the close ties between [the] people of Denmark and the United Arab Emirates. Denmark and the UAE are also close partners in the fight against climate change, investing in climate solutions for today as well as for tomorrow, while also supporting ambitious energy transitions and the need for global climate solidarity.

“Only by working together as one on a global scale will we be able to meet the challenges of the climate crisis. Denmark looks forward to continued close cooperation with the UAE on initiatives and the success of COP28, which will be hosted [in the UAE]. My hope that the themes and visions presented at the Expo site may inspire you to be a part of tomorrow’s solutions and help shape the bright green future for us all.”

The Denmark Pavilion, located in the Mobility District, welcomes visitors to experience the meaning of the word Hygge by engulfing them in a mood of cosiness and feelings of contentment. They can also learn about the history of Denmark and its business stories, and experience innovative and sustainable Danish products.
