DUBAI: A piece of artwork that its Dubai-based British creator says focuses on a “new hope for humanity” will be launched to the Moon in the second half of this year, where it will remain forever, that has been declared a UNESCO Heritage Site, it was announced at Expo 2020 Dubai’s USA Pavilion.

The art piece, which shows a heart with two figures entwined, is entitled ‘We Rise Together – with the Light of the Moon.’ Sacha Jafri, the celebrated artist who made it, said that his work is about “reconnecting to the child within us.”

Jafri said, “It aims to reconnect humanity to ourselves, each other, our creator, and ultimately to the soul of the Earth, with figures entwined, in love, reaching for a newfound understanding of unity and consequential hope, as they embark on their journey of exploration from our inhabited planet to our uninhabited Moon; to unlearn what we thought we knew, and relearn everything.”

Jafri’s most recent painting sold for a record-breaking $62 million (AED836,443,747), and he is now involved in a first-of-its-kind lunar mission, organised under the NASA Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative.

The artwork will be placed on the surface of the Moon by Spacebit, a company developing space exploration technology, and Astrobotic Technology Inc, a company providing end-to-end delivery services for payloads to the Moon. The artistic/humanitarian aspect of the mission has been put together by Selenian, a company specialising in the curation of art in space.

Spacebit and their partners have used an aerospace-grade aluminium gold plate as a canvas in order for Jafri’s artwork to be fully resilient to the lunar conditions, and to endure on the Moon, withstanding extreme conditions and temperatures of between -173 and +123 degrees C.
