Spoiler Alert!

It started off as a simple, sweet sitcom with a questionable name and a slightly amusing cast. But now it seems to be the show that everyone is binge-watching, one that is creeping into dinner table conversations and one that we can’t get enough of. It has become the first show ever to sweep the entire Comedy Category at the Emmys by winning all the 9 awards. So how did a show, set in a tiny American town, become the talk of the town? We take a look at how Schitt’s Creek became a global phenomenon.

Lockdown Learning

Schitt’s Creek has been on air for the past 5 years but it has suddenly started grabbing eyeballs and we have the lockdown to thank for that. Netflix consumption is at an all time high and when the world feels blue, everyone looks for reasons to smile. Along came this show with a happy-go-lucky cast, extremely relatable problems and a happy aura that could turn even the harshest of frowns upside down. We got addicted to this eccentric family who had it almost as bad as we did – stuck with each other with nowhere to go.

A Couple Is A Couple

Schitt’s Creek is also groundbreaking because of its treatment towards the LGBTQ community. David’s romance with women is treated as matter-of-factly as with men. There’s no big fat ‘coming out’ moment and no there’s hullabaloo about a gay couple getting married. There is no judgement, no questions and no awkward silences. But neither is there too much tom-tomming or moral righteousness. That’s the beauty of it. Patrick and David bicker like any other couple, woo each other like any other couple, navigate commitment like any other couple. Homosexuality is woven completely naturally into the show, it’s not made into a big deal at all. And in that simplicity lies its beauty.

In fact, several fans of the show have come forward and revealed how Schitt’s Creek helped them find acceptance in their own families. Afterall, it showed their families a ‘normal’, non-hysterical version of how things could be.

The Magical Moira – Johnny Rose Chemistry

Catherine O’Hara, the subject of memes galore, and Eugene Levy, the lovable dad from American Pie, came together to portray Moira and Johnny Rose and the rest, as they say, is history. The two brought with them a familiarity from having worked together for many years and turned it into electrical chemistry on screen. Moira Rose is a character you couldn’t forget even if you tried. With her iconic wigs, quirky accent and petulant “bebes”, she dazzles every second. But Eugene manages to hold his own in front of her and you can’t take your eyes off the couple.

The Growth Arc

While a riches-to-rags story may not be a novel concept, the treatment is refreshing. The characters aren’t amusing, their situation is almost pitiable, but their reactions to each other bring the humorous element. You may start off hating the characters, but if you stick around with them long enough, you’ll understand their struggles, you’ll appreciate their flaws and you’ll feel enriched watching them make the best of a nasty crisis. As the Roses grow closer to each other and make Schitt’s Creek their home, you’ll find them making space in your heart as well. And at the end of the day, that’s all that matters, isn’t it?

Spending time with this whacky family, in this godforsaken town, will change the way you look at things around you. And that’s what makes this show “simply the best, better than all the rest”.
