It’s been well over a year since the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was announced during E3 in 2019 and we finally learn the fate of the franchise.

Nintendo had earlier in the month announced Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, a Breath of the Wild prequel, during a surprise livestream and also gave a brief update on the status of the main sequel.

For those hoping that Breath of the Wild 2 would come out soon, producer Eiji Aonuma’s comments came to be a bit of a disappointment.

The presentation had confirmed that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity would be released on November 20, and because this game is clearly coming out before Breath of the Wild 2, this basically means that there’s no way that the sequel will be released in 2020.

Furthermore, it’s now much more unlikely that it’ll be released in 2021 as well.

The Legend of Zelda seriesproducer Eiji Aonuma offered a small update on the game as part of a longer video delving deeper into Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

“Regarding the sequel, in order to make the vast world you enjoyed exploring in the original game even more impressive, the team is working hard on its development. So you’ll have to wait a bit longer before we can provide more updates,” he said.

The Age of Calamity reveal on Saturday showed a younger Impa, the bold and wise Royal advisor to the Sheikha tribe, who we saw as the wizened head in Breath of the Wild, advising the reawakened Link to seek the warriors.

What’s more, she looks to be a playable character!

As mentioned, Age of Calamity is a prequel to Breath of the Wild. The player will likely experience the ‘Great Calamity’ and the massive battles that occurred which ultimately end in the heroes losing, Zelda unleashing her true power, and Link being put to sleep for a 100 years.

The game is expected to offer insight into the Breath of the Wild‘s world – it wouldn’t be surprising if Nintendo chose to lay some narrative groundwork for Breath of the Wild 2 in this spin-off.

Either way, there’s another Zelda game out soon, and we can’t wait!
