DUBAI: Kite enthusiasts were given free rein to indulge their passion at Expo’s Al Forsan Park, watched by thousands of visitors as part of an activity organised by the Malaysia Pavilion.

The participants included young and old, with many queueing up to an hour before the event was due to start. The colourful kites were mainly in the shape of butterflies – the theme was chosen by the organisers to honour the national butterfly, Rajah Brooke, found in the rainforests of Malaysia.

“We brought this idea all the way from the Astana Expo, and named it the ‘butterfly effect,’” said Michelle Lau Sook Yee, Project Leader, and Malaysia Pavilion Director. “What it signifies is that a small action in one area creates a big impact in another. The butterfly is beautiful and transformational, and it represents Malaysia at the Expo, in the sense that we are here to inspire, share and create happy moments together… This fits into the Sustainability sub-theme of Expo 2020, as Malaysia has vast areas of rainforest.

“Through this event, the Malaysia Pavilion wants to share the thrill of flying kites with everyone, especially families. So we are very happy to see all of these smiling and excited faces, as they indulge in an activity that is very popular in Malaysia.”

The event will be repeated on the last Saturday of every month until the end of Expo 2020.
