Treasuries of Knowledge in 50 Years exhibition presents the history of UAE libraries

AL AIN: MAKTABA, the library management section of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), launched ‘Treasuries of Knowledge in 50 Years‘, an exhibition aimed at outlining the history of UAE libraries over the past 50 years.

Held at Zayed Central Library in Al Ain and lasting for six months, the exhibition underscores the efforts made by early pioneers in building and improving public, private and specialised libraries in Abu Dhabi and the UAE.

The opening ceremony was attended by Shaikha Almehairi, Library Management Department Director at DCT Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Ham Al-Ameri; Lt. Colonel Musleh Al Darei, Head of the Libraries and Research Section at Abu Dhabi Police; Lt. Colonel Nasr Al Junaibi from the Saif bin Zayed Academy for Policing and Security Studies; Retired Colonel Thnay Al-Shukaili from Police Museum; Dr. Hamad Bin Seray, UAE University Libraries Director; Hamad Al Ahbabi, Head of Infrastructure at Al Ain Hospital and Tawam Hospital; Aysha Al Marzooqi, Senior specialist at Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK); Mutaib Salem Al Humaid, Salem Bin Abdullah Al Humaid Public Islamic Library.

Delegations from the UAE Deaf Association, Mohammed Bin Rashid Library – Dubai, Tahnoon Bin Mohamed Educational Complex, UAE University, Al Ain City Municipality, Al Ain Center for Care & Rehabilitation, Emirates Cancer Society, also attended the ceremony, along with elite writers, intellectuals, thinkers, and those concerned with cultural affairs in the country.

The attendees toured the exhibition and previewed special videos on the journey of libraries in the country. The tour was translated into sign language for students with hearing disabilities, followed by a special workshop on book typesetting session presented by Sanaa Haroun.

Highlighting the importance of introducing the history of UAE’s libraries to society, Shaikha Almehairi said, “At MAKTABA, we believe that the initiatives and efforts made by early pioneers formed the basis for the country’s sustainable cultural renaissance. In conjunction with the National Month of Reading in the UAE, MAKTABA aimed to launch ‘Treasuries of Knowledge in 50 Years’ exhibition to introduce current generations to the role that libraries played in shaping the Emirati identity over the past decades.”

Fatima Al Tamimi, Programming Lead and Competition Supervisor at DCT Abu Dhabi, said, “In tandem with the ‘UAE Reads’ campaign, MAKTABA organised integrated cultural events to instill reading among various subsets of the community. Visitors to ‘Treasuries of Knowledge in 50 Years’ exhibition will learn about the history of libraries in the country and review their promising future.”

‘Treasuries of Knowledge in 50 Years’ exhibition displays a wide collection of rare books and manuscripts that were at the UAE libraries over the past decades. Various workshops, lectures, and seminars will be held throughout the exhibition to highlight the history of UAE libraries.
