Umer Sharif passes away: The stage laughs no more

Beloved Pakistani comedian, Umer Sharif, passed away today at 66, leaving the world stage in mourning. The comedian was diagnosed with multiple ailments including coronary conditions. He had been shifted to Germany as his health was deteriorating.
As per reports, three days after his stay in Germany, Pakistan’s legendary comedian was expected to resume his travel to the United States (US) for medical treatment, but the departure postponed due to critical condition.
The comedian was regarded as one of the greatest comedians in the sub-continent for his stage comedies. He started his career in 1974 from Karachi as a stage performer at the age of 14. He joined theatre, using the stage name Umer Zarif but later renamed that to Umer Sharif. Some of his extremely popular comedy stage plays were 1989’s ‘Bakra Qistoon Pe‘ and ‘Buddha Ghar Pe Hai’ which gained a cult status.
He had also hosted his own late-night talk show, The Shareef Show, on Geo TV. On the show he interviewed many famous actors, entertainers, musicians, and even politicians. He also appeared as a guest judge on the Indian stand-up comedy show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, alongside Navjot Singh Siddhu and Shekhar Suman.
People from the subcontinent would fondly recall the multiple family gatherings where his stage shows would be played on VCRs amidst rounds of laughter. He has been a source of humour for many with his famous one-liners.
Celebrities and artists from Pakistan and India alike, took to Twitter to offer their condolences.
